Infill is the layer of sand or granular material beneath the turf fibers that keeps blades upright, supports drainage, and gives the surface its cushioning. Over time, pet urine, waste residue, and general use cause infill to compact, saturate, and lose its ability to let liquid pass through properly. Once infill reaches that point, no amount of surface cleaning fixes the underlying problem – the old material has to come out and be replaced with fresh, pet-safe infill.
